DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Pinpoint Tests

 

PINPOINT TEST A: DRIFT LEFT OR RIGHT

 

A1 INSPECT TIRES

Yes
GO to A2.

No
CHECK suspension components for misalignment, abnormal wear or damage. CORRECT suspension concerns and REPLACE damaged components.

 

A2 INSPECT WHEEL BEARINGS

Yes
GO to A3.

No
ADJUST or REPLACE and lubricate front wheel bearing as necessary. PERFORM Road Test.

 

A3 INSPECT FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER ARM BALL JOINT

  • Support vehicle in normal driving position with vehicle weight on wheels.
  • Attach dial indicator at the front suspension lower arm ball joint in such a way as to measure the lateral movement between the front wheel spindle and front suspension lower arm .
  • Does the reading exceed 0.4mm (0.015 inch)?
Yes
REPLACE front suspension lower arm ball joint .

No
GO to A4.

 

A4 CHECK CAMBER

  • Check side-to-side difference in camber, specification is -0.5 degrees ± .75 degrees.
  • Is camber within specifications?
Yes
GO to B1.

No
CORRECT camber as necessary. INSPECT related components for wear or damage.

 

PINPOINT TEST B: STEERING WHEEL OFF CENTER

 

B1 INSPECT FRONT SUSPENSION 

  • Raise vehicle on hoist.
  • Inspect front suspension components for excessive wear or damage.
  • Any damage or wear noted?
Yes
CORRECT suspension concerns. REPLACE damaged components.

No
GO to B2.

 

B2 INSPECT STEERING

  • Inspect steering components for excessive wear or damage.
  • Any damage or wear noted?
Yes
CORRECT steering concerns. REPLACE damaged components. REFER to Section 11-00.

No
GO to B3.

 

B3 CHECK ALIGNMENT

  • Does wheel alignment meet specifications?
Yes
ADJUST clear vision as outlined.

No
ADJUST wheel alignment as outlined.
