DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Torque Converter Clutch Operation Test

This test verifies that the torque converter clutch control system and the torque converter are operating properly.

  1. Perform Quick Test as outlined. Check for DTCs P0741, 652, P1741, P0743, 656, P1743, P1742, P1744 and 628. Refer to Pinpoint Test C for diagnosis.
  1. Connect a tachometer to engine.
  1. Bring engine to normal operation temperature by driving vehicle at highway speeds for approximately 15 minutes in D position.
  1. After normal operating temperature is reached, maintain a constant vehicle speed of about 80 km/h (50 mph) and tap brake pedal with the left foot.
  1. Engine rpm should increase when brake pedal is tapped, and decrease about five seconds after pedal is released. If this does not occur, refer to Torque Converter Operation Concerns in the Diagnosis by Symptom.
  1. If vehicle stalls in D or manual 2 at idle with vehicle at a stop, move manual lever to manual 1 position. If vehicle stalls, refer to Torque Converter Operation Concerns in the Diagnosis by Symptom section. Service as required. If vehicle does not stall in D, refer to Electrical Diagnosis for PCM and Vehicle Harness Diagnosis in Pinpoint Test C.
