Carrier Inspection Before Disassembly

• Differential Side Bearing Replacer T57L-4221-A2
• Companion Flange Remover T65L-4851-B
• Bearing Remover T70P-4221-A
• Pinion Bearing Cup Replacer T71P-4616-A
• Pinion Bearing Cone Remover T71P-4621-B
• Companion Flange Holding Tool T78P-4851-A
• Pinion Depth Gauge Set T79P-4020-A
• Pinion Seal Replacer T79P-4676-A
• Step Plate T81P-4220-A
• Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C
• Companion Flange Replacer TOOL-4858-E

The differential case assembly, drive pinion and ring gear should be inspected before they are removed from the carrier. These inspections can find the cause of the condition and determine the resolution needed.

1. Wipe lubricant from internal working parts and visually inspect parts for wear and/or damage.

2. Rotate gears to see if there is any roughness which would indicate worn or damaged bearings or gears.

3. Check ring gear teeth for signs of scoring, abnormal wear or nicks/chips.

4. Set up Dial Indicator With Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent and check ring gear backlash and ring gear backface runout as outlined. Refer to Specifications.

5. Proper gearset assembly must be checked using the Pinion Depth Gauge Set T79P-4020-A, which shows correct pinion shim required to provide acceptable running condition. Refer to Drive Pinion and Gearset.
