REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

A/C Evaporator Core Orifice

NOTE: The A/C evaporator core orifice (19D990) should be replaced whenever a A/C compressor (19703) is replaced for lack of performance (internal damage).

The A/C evaporator core orifice located in the condenser to evaporator tube (19835) cannot be serviced in detail as a component of the line. If replacement is necessary, the condenser to evaporator tube and A/C evaporator core orifice must be replaced as an assembly, or an orifice tube replacement service kit may be used as an optional service procedure. The procedures for each type of service follow:

  1. To remove and install a condenser to evaporator tube with integral A/C evaporator core orifice , discharge refrigerant from A/C system. Observe all safety precautions. Refer to Section 12-00.
  1. Disconnect refrigerant line at A/C condenser core outlet connection using procedure and one of spring lock coupling tools shown in the Spring Lock Coupling illustration. Refer to Spring Lock Coupling, Removal and Installation.
  1. Disconnect refrigerant line at tube-O end using a wrench on each side of tube-O fittings. Remove condenser to evaporator tube from vehicle.
  1. Route new condenser to evaporator tube (and integral A/C evaporator core orifice ) with protective caps installed.
  1. Remove protective caps and connect new condenser to evaporator tube into system using new O-ring seals lubricated with clean refrigerant oil. Connect spring lock coupling as shown in the Spring Lock Coupling illustration. Refer to Spring Lock Coupling, Removal and Installation.
  1. Leak-test, evacuate and charge refrigerant system. Observe all safety precautions. Refer to Section 12-00.
  1. To remove and install an A/C evaporator core orifice , discharge the A/C refrigerant system. Refer to System Discharging in Section 12-00. Observe all safety precautions.
  1. Remove the condenser to evaporator tube from the vehicle.
  1. Locate the A/C evaporator core orifice by the three indented notches or circular depression in the metal portion of the condenser to evaporator tube .

A/C Evaporator Core Orifice

  1. Note the angular position of the ends of the condenser to evaporator tube so that it can be reassembled in correct position.
  1. Cut a 63.5mm (2-1/2 inch) section from condenser to evaporator tube at A/C evaporator core orifice location. Do not cut closer than 25.4mm (1 inch) from the start of a bend in condenser to evaporator tube .

Condenser to Evaporator Tube

  1. Remove A/C evaporator core orifice from A/C evaporator housing (19850) with pliers. The orifice tube removal tool cannot be used.
  1. Flush the two pieces of the condenser to evaporator tube to remove any contaminants.
  1. Lubricate O-ring seals with clean refrigerant oil and assemble A/C evaporator core orifice tube kit (with A/C evaporator core orifice installed) to condenser to evaporator tube. Ensure flow direction arrow is pointing toward A/C evaporator core (19860) end of condenser to evaporator tube , and taper of each A/C compressor core ring is toward compression nut.

NOTE: The inlet portion of the condenser to evaporator tube will be positioned against the A/C evaporator core orifice tabs when correctly assembled.

  1. While holding hex of tube in a vise, tighten each compression nut to 88-94 Nm (65-69 lb-ft) with a crow-foot wrench.

A/C Evaporator Core Orifice Kit Installed

  1. Assemble condenser to evaporator tube to vehicle using new O-ring seals lubricated with clean refrigerant oil. Use only specified O-ring seals at spring lock coupling.
  1. Leak-test, evacuate and charge system following approved procedures.
  1. Check system for proper operation.
