REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Seat, Child Restraint—Tether Attachment

Some manufacturers make childs safety seats (19E535) with a tether strap that goes over the back of the vehicle seat and attaches to an anchoring point behind the vehicle seat.

Ford recommends placement of a tethered childs safety seat in a rear seating position with the tether strap attached to either of the two tether anchoring points shown in the following illustrations.

All vehicles built for sale in Canada include a tether anchorage hardware kit for use with child safety seats. Attachment holes (at each rear seating position) have been provided in your vehicle to attach the anchorage hardware, if required. Additional kits can be obtained at no charge from any authorized Ford dealer.

All vehicles built for sale in the U.S. do not include a tether anchorage hardware kit for use with child safety seats. However, tether attachment holes (at each rear seating position) have been provided in your vehicle to attach the tether anchorage hardware. If tether anchorage hardware is required for the childs safety seat , use only the tether anchor kit available at no charge from any authorized Ford dealer.

WARNING: FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE PRECAUTIONS COULD INCREASE THE CHANCE AND/OR SEVERITY OF AN INJURY IN AN ACCIDENT.

Tether Anchor Kit for Coupe Installation

The 2-door Coupe has two anchoring points at the locations shown in the following illustrations. Choose one of these rear locations available for attaching the tether anchorage hardware.

Tether Anchoring Locations

Coupe

  1. Fold down the rear seat and look inside the luggage compartment underneath the metal panel in the area behind the top of the rear seat back and locate the two existing 9mm (0.35 inch) tether anchorage holes identified by the letter "T" stamped in the metal panel.

NOTE: The following illustration is looking upward into the luggage compartment.

Tether Anchorage Location

  1. Choose the desired tether hole location.

WARNING: USE ONLY THE TETHER ATTACHMENT HOLE LOCATIONS SHOWN. THE TETHER ANCHORAGE WILL NOT PERFORM PROPERLY IF THE WRONG MOUNTING LOCATION IS USED.

NOTE: You can attach an anchor to the metal panel located between the top of the rear seat back and the bottom of the rear window glass. However, before you attach the tether anchor, you must pierce a hole in the interior trim panel for the anchor.

  1. Pierce a hole in the interior trim panel for the tether anchor. Use a sharp instrument such as an awl or ice pick and insert the instrument up through the desired tether anchorage hole in the metal panel and up into the small diameter hole provided in the bottom surface of the trim panel as shown.

WARNING: AVOID HOLDING DOWN THE TRIM PANEL IN THE AREA THAT THE HOLE IS BEING PIERCED TO AVOID HAND OR ARM INJURY.

WARNING: A NARROW BLADE IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS IT COULD BREAK, POSSIBLY CAUSING EYE INJURY.

  1. From the top of the trim panel, use the small diameter hole as a locator and cut a 30mm (1-3/16 inch) slot centered on the pierced hole. Use a utility knife to cut the cloth and sound insulation. Use protective eye wear when cutting the slot in the trim.
  1. Carefully slit and cut away just enough cloth and sound insulation material to allow the tether anchor to be inserted through the slot in the rigid panel material as shown in the following illustration.

  1. Install the tether anchor using the parts supplied in the tether anchorage kit.

    Item Part Number Description
    1 42006 Back Window Glass
2 Tether Bracket (Part of Tether Anchor Kit)
3A Bolt (Part of Tether Anchor Kit)
4 Retaining Nut (Part of Tether Anchor Kit)
    5 46506 Package Tray Panel
    A Tighten to 22-34 Nm (16.2-25.1 Lb-Ft)

WARNING: THE TETHER ANCHOR BRACKET MUST BE BOLTED DIRECTLY TO THE SHEET METAL.

WARNING: TIGHTEN THE ANCHOR TO 22-34 Nm (16-25 LB-FT). OTHERWISE, THE SAFETY SEAT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SECURED AND THE CHILD MAY BE INJURED IN A SUDDEN STOP OR COLLISION.

WARNING: THE THREADED HOLE IN THE TETHER ANCHOR OR RETAINING NUT HAS AN 8MM METRIC THREAD. A WRENCH WILL BE NEEDED TO TIGHTEN THE 8MM BOLT TO THE REQUIRED TORQUE. SOME CHILD RESTRAINTS COME WITH A NON-METRIC BOLT WITH A DIFFERENT THREAD. DO NOT USE A NON-METRIC BOLT AS IT MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE TO SCREW IT ALL THE WAY INTO THE HOLE, RESULTING IN INADEQUATE RETENTION OF THE CHILD RESTRAINT. USE ONLY THE METRIC ANCHOR BOLT SUPPLIED IN THIS KIT. IF YOU NEED A REPLACEMENT METRIC BOLT OR RETAINING NUT, OR ASSISTANCE, ANY FORD DEALER WILL BE HAPPY TO ASSIST YOU.

  1. Return the rear seat back to the upright position.

NOTE: Follow the child seat manufacturer's instructions to attach the tether strap to the tether bracket.

Tether Anchor Kit for Convertible Installation

Convertible

The convertible has two tether anchoring points in the luggage compartment floor at the locations shown in the following illustrations. Choose either of these locations available for attaching the tether anchorage hardware.

NOTE: Attaching the child seat tether strap to the anchorage hardware can only be done with the convertible top in the full up position.

Tether Anchoring Points—Driver Side

NOTE: The tether anchorage locations are not immediately visible. Remove the luggage compartment floor carpet to gain access to these locations.

  1. From inside the luggage compartment, locate the rigid luggage compartment front interior trim panel behind the rear seat back.

Trim Panel, Removal—Passenger Side

  1. Gently push forward either the right or left hand side of the trim panel to expose either of the two 9mm (0.35 inch) tether anchorage clearance holes and 8mm threaded weld nuts provided in the luggage compartment floor just forward and inboard of each rear wheel well.

WARNING: USE ONLY THE TETHER ATTACHMENT HOLE LOCATIONS SHOWN. THE TETHER ANCHORAGE WILL NOT PERFORM PROPERLY IF THE WRONG MOUNTING LOCATION IS USED.

  1. Gently push forward the bottom of the front luggage compartment trim panel and hold in this position to allow installation of the tether anchor.
  1. Remove any existing sealer from the tether hole in the floor.
  1. Install the tether anchor as shown in the following illustration using the bolt and appropriate anchor bracket supplied in the tether anchorage kit.

Tether Anchor Installation—Passenger Side

Tether Strap Position—Passenger Side

NOTE: The tether bracket may need to be rotated inboard (toward the center of the vehicle) slightly to allow the child tether strap to be properly routed as shown in the previous illustration.

WARNING: THE TETHER ANCHOR BRACKET MUST BE BOLTED DIRECTLY TO THE REAR FLOOR SHEET METAL. THE INTERIOR TRIM MUST NOT BE TRAPPED BETWEEN THE ANCHOR BRACKET AND THE SHEET METAL. FAILURE TO PROPERLY INSTALL THE ANCHOR BRACKET COULD RESULT IN IMPROPER ATTACHMENT PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT.

WARNING: TIGHTEN THE ANCHOR TO 22-34 Nm (16-25 LB-FT). OTHERWISE, THE CHILD'S SAFETY SEAT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SECURED AND THE CHILD MAY BE INJURED IN A SUDDEN STOP OR COLLISION.

IF YOU NEED A REPLACEMENT METRIC BOLT OR ASSISTANCE, ANY FORD DEALER WILL BE HAPPY TO ASSIST YOU.

  1. After the tether anchor bracket has been installed, position the luggage compartment floor carpet.
  1. From inside the vehicle, ensure the deep well storage compartment material is positioned properly so that it is not shifted to one side or the other.
  1. Route the child seat tether strap over the seat back so that it is properly positioned between the seat back panel and the large opening provided in the deep well material as shown in the previous illustration.

NOTE: Follow the child seat manufacturer's instructions to attach the tether strap to the tether bracket.

From inside luggage compartment looking underneath metal panel structure behind rear seat, locate one of two existing 9.0mm (0.35 inch) holes identified by the letter "T" stamped next to the holes. Each outboard hole is located approximately 330.2mm (13 inches) outboard from centerline of vehicle and along a line 101.6mm (4.5 inches) rearward from center of rear seat speaker.
