DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Safety Belt, Lap/Shoulder—Front
Coupe
Driver Side
Convertible
Driver Side
- The lap/shoulder safety belt has a dual retractor system.
- A shoulder belt retractor is attached to a bracket located in the quarter panel
and a lap belt located at the base of quarter panel
at rear of door opening.
- The safety belt webbing of the two retractors is joined to a common tongue.
- The lap/shoulder safety belt retractor is designed to let the webbing
freely move in or out, except during vehicle hard braking, hard cornering or
impacts approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. Then it is automatically locked
by a mechanically actuated inertia sensor.
- The shoulder belt must always be in the belt holder on the seat back when
the belt in use.
- The lap belt webbing passes through a guide which is attached to the seat
cushion. Be sure the webbing is routed through the guide.

Convertible
RH Front Passenger
- The lap/shoulder safety belt has a dual retractor system.
- The shoulder belt retractor is attached to a bracket located in the quarter panel
and the lap belt retractor is located at the base of quarter panel
at the rear of the door opening.
- The safety belt webbing of the two retractors is joined to a common tongue.
- The lap/shoulder safety belt retractor is designed to let the webbing
freely move in or out, except during vehicle, hard braking, hard cornering or
impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. Then it is automatically
locked by a mechanically actuated inertia sensor.
- The convertible has a dual locking mode retractor on the lap belt part of
the lap/shoulder belt on the front seat passenger side. The retractor modes
function as follows.
- In the vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode, the lap belt retractor
will allow freedom of movement, locking tight only in hard braking and hard
cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more.
- The lap belt retractor cannot be made to lock by pulling on the belt.
- In the automatic locking mode, the lap belt retractor will remain locked
and does not allow freedom of movement.
- This mode provides tight lap belt on the hips and child seat or infant
carrier installation.
- This mode must be used when installing a child seat or
infant carrier on the front passenger seat. To switch the retractor from the
emergency locking mode to the automatic locking mode, perform the following
steps:
WARNING: NEVER INSTALL A REAR-FACING CARRIER OR CHILD SEAT IN THE RIGHT HAND
FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. A CHILD IN A REAR-FACING CHILD RESTRAINT INSTALLED IN THE
FRONT SEAT CAN BE BADLY INJURED BY THE PASSENGER AIR BAG IF IT INFLATES. NEVER
USE A REAR-FACING CHILD RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT SEAT. IF A FORWARD-FACING CHILD
RESTRAINT IS SUITABLE FOR YOUR CHILD, ALWAYS MOVE THE PASSENGER SEAT AS FAR
BACK AS POSSIBLE. ATTACH BELT TO BUCKLE. TIGHTEN BELT. FOR MORE INFORMATION,
SEE YOUR OWNER GUIDE AND THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH YOUR CHILD RESTRAINT.
- Buckle the lap/shoulder belt.
- Grasp the lap part of the belt below the child seat instruction label and
pull upward until all of the stored belt is out and a click is heard.
- Allow the belt to retract. A clicking sound will be heard as the belt
retracts. This indicates that the retractor is in the automatic locking mode.
- Pull down on the belt to remove slack in the belt.
NOTE: When the lap/shoulder belt is unbuckled and allowed to retract
completely, the retractor will switch to the vehicle sensitive (emergency)
locking mode.
Coupe/Convertible
For the RH front and both rear seating
positions of the coupe and for both rear seating positions of the convertible,
the lap/shoulder safety belt retractors are equipped with a dual locking mode
feature for the shoulder belt portion of the combination
lap/shoulder safety belt.
WARNING: NEVER INSTALL A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT OR INFANT CARRIER IN THE RH
The two locking modes of the retractors are vehicle sensitive (emergency)
locking mode and automatic locking mode.
- Vehicle sensitive locking mode allows the webbing to freely move in or
out, except during vehicle hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of
approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. The retractor cannot be made to lock by
pulling on the belt.
- Automatic locking mode does not allow freedom of movement. The retractor
will remain locked.
- This mode provides a tight belt fit and must be used when installing a
child safety seat or infant carrier.
To switch the retractor from the emergency locking mode to the automatic
locking mode, perform the following:
For RH front and both rear seating positions on
the coupe and both rear seating positions on the convertible:
- Grasp the shoulder portion of the belt and pull downward until all of the
belt is extracted and a click is heard. At this time, the retractor is in the
automatic locking mode (child restraint mode).
- Allow the belt to retract. A clicking sound will be heard as the belt
retracts. This indicates the retractor is in the automatic locking mode. Pull
up on the belt to remove any slack in the belt.
For the RH front seating position on the convertible:
- Grasp the lap portion of the belt below the child seat label. Pull upward
until all of the belt is extracted and a click is heard. At this time, the lap
belt retractor is in the automatic locking mode (child restraint mode).
- Allow the belt to retract. A clicking sound will be heard as the belt
retracts. This indicates the retractor is in the automatic locking mode. Pull
down on the belt to remove any slack in the belt.
