The trip odometer displays the kilometers (miles) driven since the reset button was pressed. The reset button will set the trip odometer to zero. The trip odometer receives a voltage signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) (VSS). The VSS is a small permanent magnet generator that is driven by a gear inside the transmission. The VSS outputs a voltage that varies according to the vehicle road speed.
