REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Steering Column

Removal

 CAUTION: Do not remove steering wheel (3600) and driver side air bag module (043B13) as an assembly unless the column is locked or the steering column gear input shaft coupling (3A525) is secured to keep it from turning. This will avoid damage to the air bag sliding contact (14A664) assembly.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) and positive battery cable. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.
  1. Remove the bolt retaining steering column gear input shaft coupling to steering column.
  1. Remove the lower steering column shroud (3530) and upper steering column shroud , fastened by self-tapping screws.
  1. Remove the hood release mechanism directly under the steering column tube (3514) assembly.
  1. Disconnect all electrical connections (quick-couplers) from the steering column switches ( turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359), ignition switch (11572) and key warning buzzer connecting wire).
  1. Loosen the two nuts retaining steering column tube boot (3C611) to the dash panel (01610) .
  1. Remove four nuts retaining steering column tube assembly to cross bar beam. Lower steering column tube assembly to clear the four mounting bolts, remove ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719) (automatic transmission only) and pull.

    A Tighten to 1.4-2 Nm (12-17 Lb-In)
 

Installation

  1. Under instrument panel, install ignition/shifter interlock cable and tighten retaining screws to 1.5-2.0 Nm (10-13 lb-in) (automatic transmission only). Align the four bolts on cross bar beam with the mounting holes on the column collar. Install nuts and tighten to 12.7-17.3 Nm (22-30 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the ignition switch , key warning buzzer connector wire, and turn signal and windshield wiper switch connectors.
  1. Engage steering column gear input shaft coupling and steer 40.3-54.7 Nm (29.7-40.3 lb-ft).
  1. Tighten the two screws retaining steering column tube boot to the dash panel .
  1. Install steering wheel as outlined.
  1. Install the upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud by installing self-tapping screws.
  1. Install hood release mechanism beneath steering column tube assembly.
  1. Connect battery ground cable .
  1. Check steering column tube assembly for proper operation.
