REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Steering Wheel with Air Bag

Removal

  1. Center front wheels (1007) to the straight-ahead position.

     WARNING: THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED BEFORE ANY AIR BAG COMPONENT IS SERVICED.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) and positive battery cable. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.
  1. Remove two cover caps from steering wheel backcover to access bolts.
  1. Remove two driver side air bag module retaining bolts and lift driver side air bag module (043B13) off steering wheel (3600) .
  1. Disconnect driver side air bag wire harness from driver side air bag module and remove driver side air bag module from steering wheel .
  1. Disconnect horn and speed control wire harness (if equipped) from steering wheel .
  1. Remove and discard steering wheel retaining bolt.

     CAUTION: Be sure control assembly wire harness does not get caught on wheel assembly when lifting steering wheel off steering column gear input shaft coupling (3A525) to avoid damage to control assembly wire harness.

  1. Remove steering wheel from steering column tube (3514) using Steering Wheel Remover T67L-3600-A. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off of the steering column gear input shaft coupling .
 

Installation

  1. Ensure that front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

     CAUTION: Be sure air bag sliding contact wire is not pinched or air bag monitor will detect a fault.

  1. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel opening at the three o'clock position and position steering wheel on steering column gear input shaft coupling . The steering wheel and steering column gear input shaft coupling alignment marks should be aligned.
  1. Install new steering wheel retaining bolt and tighten to 31-45 Nm (22-33 lb-ft).
  1. Connect speed control wire harness to steering wheel and snap connector assembly into steering wheel clip (if equipped).

     CAUTION: Be sure wiring does not get trapped between steering wheel and air bag sliding contact (14A664) assembly or air bag monitor will detect a fault.

  1. Connect air bag wire harness to driver side air bag module and install driver side air bag module to steering wheel . Tighten retaining bolts to 4-6 Nm (36-47 lb-in).
  1. Connect positive battery cable and battery ground cable . Verify air bag warning indicator.
