CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Steering Gear

 

Cleaning

  1. Use a clean work bench and tools.
  1. Clean the exterior of the steering gear (3504) with solvent. If necessary, drain off excess hydraulic fluid.
  1. Handle the parts carefully to avoid nicks, burrs, scratches and dirt. Do not use solvent on seals.
 

Inspection

  1. Inspect the power steering gear input shaft bearing (3D525) . Check the fit of the power steering gear input shaft bearing on the power steering gear input shaft and control (3D517) . Replace the power steering gear input shaft bearing if necessary.
  1. Inspect the valve housing for wear, scoring or burrs.
  1. Check the fluid passages for obstruction or leakage.
  1. Inspect the steering gear housing (3548) for cracks and stripped threads and the mating surfaces for burrs. Inspect the piston bore for scoring or wear. If necessary, replace the steering gear housing .
  1. Ensure power steering gear input shaft and control and power steering gear input shaft bearings rotate freely.
  1. Check the power steering gear input shaft and control for freedom of movement in the sleeve. If movement is impaired, replace the power steering gear input shaft and control assembly.
  1. Inspect the piston rack-and-pinion shaft teeth for nicks and burrs.
