REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Steering Gear

 

Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . Turn ignition switch (11572) to RUN position.
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. Position drain pan to catch fluid from power steering lines.
  1. Remove one bolt retaining flexible coupling to power steering gear input shaft and control (3D517) .
  1. Remove two front wheel spindle connecting end retaining cotter pins and nuts. Separate studs from spindle arms, using Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.
  1. Remove two nuts, insulator washers, and bolts retaining steering gear (3504) to No. 2 front crossmember (5019) .
  1. Remove front rubber insulators.
  1. Position steering gear to allow access to hydraulic lines and disconnect lines.
  1. Remove steering gear .
 

Gear Insulator Sleeve Replacement

Should the sleeve be damaged, it can be replaced. Remove the sleeve by collapsing it with a pair of vise-grip pliers and twisting and pulling. Install the new sleeve and draw it into position with the mounting bolt during steering gear installation.

A Tighten to 56-84 Nm (42-62 Lb-Ft)

 

Installation

  1. Install new plastic seals on hydraulic line fittings as outlined.
  1. Install steering gear on mounting spikes.

     CAUTION: The hoses are designed to swivel when properly tightened. Do not attempt to eliminate looseness by over-tightening fittings or plastic seals may become damaged.

  1. Install hydraulic lines. Tighten fittings to 27-34 Nm (20-25 lb-ft).
  1. Install front rubber insulators. Make sure all rubber insulators are pushed completely inside the steering gear housing (3548) before installing the mounting bolts.
  1. Insert power steering gear input shaft and control into flexible coupling. Install two mounting bolts, insulator washers and nuts. Tighten the two nuts to 56-84 Nm (42-62 lb-ft) while holding the bolts. Install and tighten the flexible coupling bolt to 28-40 Nm (20-30 lb-ft).
  1. Connect front wheel spindle connecting rod or end (3A130) to spindle arms and install two retaining nuts. Tighten nuts to 48-63 Nm (35-47 lb-ft). After tightening to specification, tighten nuts to their nearest cotter pin castellation, and install two new cotter pins.
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
  1. Connect battery ground cable .
  1. Fill power steering system with the specified quantity and quality of steering fluid. Refer to Section 11-00.
  1. If front wheel spindle connecting rod or ends were loosened, check and adjust front end alignment. Refer to Section 04-00.
