CLEANING AND INSPECTION
Steering Pump, Power
Flushing
If dirt is found in the power steering gear (3504)
, flush the power steering pump (3A674)
as follows:
- Make sure all other hoses are connected, then disconnect the power steering pressure hose (3A719)
at the steering gear
.
- Place the power steering pressure hose
in a container.
- Fill the power steering oil reservoir (3A697)
with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or
equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M2C33-F.
- Disconnect the ignition coil wire.
- While adding approximately 1.9L (0.5 gal) of fluid, turn ignition switch (11572)
to the START position, and crank the engine with the starter motor (11002)
. As soon as all fluid has been added, turn the ignition switch
to the OFF position.
- Connect the power steering pressure hose
at the steering gear
.
- Check the fluid level.
- Crank the engine with the starter motor
and add fluid until the level remains constant.
- Lower vehicle and connect the ignition coil wire.
- Start the engine and turn the steering wheel (3600)
from lock-to-lock to expel any air trapped in the
system. This will restore normal steering action.
Cleaning
Wash all parts, except seals, in a chlorinated solvent and dry with
compressed air.
Inspection
To determine when to replace power steering pump components, refer to the
following guidelines.
NOTE: Some components must be replaced regardless of condition.
- Reuse the power steering pressure, return and pump outlet line connector kit (3R608)
if the corners are not rounded and the threads are
intact.
- Replace all seals except the power steering pump rotor shaft oil seal (3B592)
. Reuse the power steering pump rotor shaft oil seal
if it does not leak.
- Reuse the power steering oil reservoir
assembly if the power steering oil reservoir
seal areas are not damaged. Check for a broken or
missing baffle.
- Reuse the power steering pump housing (3A643)
or power steering pump housing
assembly if the O-ring and snap ring surfaces are not
damaged.
- Reuse upper power steering pump pressure plate (3D590)
and lower power steering pump pressure plates
if there is no scoring on the wear surface.
Polish the phosphate coating, if necessary, but do not remove it.
- Reuse the power steering pump rotor (3D607)
and cam assembly, if wear is limited to removal of the
phosphate coating on the cam contour. Do not disassemble the unit. Push the power steering pump rotor
part way through the cam insert, being careful not to
dislodge the slippers and springs. Check the cam ID for scoring or burring.
Check the power steering pump rotor
faces and OD for scoring and chipping.
Do not service or refinish the upper power steering pump pressure plate
and lower power steering pump pressure plate
, cam, or power steering pump rotor
assembly. If wear or burring is evident, replace them
with new components.
- Install a new power steering pump rotor
and cam assembly if the slippers are worn. Replace the
springs if they are bent or broken.
- Reuse the power steering pump rotor shaft if the thrust faces, bushing
diameter and shaft
seal diameter are not excessively worn or scored.
- Reuse the power steering pump housing
and bushing assembly if all of the threaded hoses are
not damaged beyond service and the bushing diameter is not scored or worn
0.01mm (0.0005 inch) over the 18mm (0.6897 inch) maximum. Service threaded
holes by drilling out the damaged threads and installing helicoil inserts. If
the bushing is scored or excessively worn, install a new power steering pump housing
and bushing assembly.
- Reuse power steering pump valve (3A561)
body if
power steering pump valve bore is free of nicks and scoring. Power steering pump valve
must fall freely in valve bore. Replace power steering pump valve
housing and/or power steering pump valve
if power steering pump valve
sticks in bore.
