Start-Up Procedure After Power Steering Pump or Gear Service

After engine start up, follow these steps to eliminate excessive steering system noise due to air trapped in the system during service:

  1. Disconnect the ignition coil wire and raise front wheels (1007) off floor. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Fill the power steering oil reservoir (3A697) .
  1. Crank the engine with the starter motor (11002) and add fluid until the level remains constant.
  1. While cranking the engine, rotate the steering wheel (3600) from lock-to-lock.

    NOTE: Front wheels must be off the floor during lock-to-lock rotation of the steering wheel .

  1. Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
  1. Connect the ignition coil wire.
  1. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes.
  1. Rotate steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
  1. Turn off the engine and check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
  1. Purge system of air as outlined, if air is still present.
