Brake Line Replacement

If a section of brake line is damaged, the entire section must be replaced with a line of the same type, size, shape, and length.

 CAUTION: Never use copper tubing. It is subject to fatigue, cracking, and corrosion which could result in brake line failure.

Double wall steel tubing is used throughout the brake hydraulic system. All brake line fittings must be properly double flared to provide strong leakproof connections. When bending tubing to fit the underbody or rear axle contours, be careful not to kink or crack the line.

Replace a brake line as follows:

NOTE: The outside diameter of the line is used to specify size.

1. Obtain the recommended line and steel fitting of the correct size.

   NOTE: Correct length may be determined by measuring the line to be replaced using a length of cord and then adding 1/8 inch for the double flares.

2. Use a tubing cutter to cut the tubing to length.

   NOTE: Make sure the fittings are installed and oriented correctly before flaring both ends of the line.

3. Use a suitable flaring tool to double flare the ends of the line. Follow the instructions included with the tool.

4. Bend the line to the necessary contours and connect. Clearance of 19mm (3/4 inch) must be maintained between the line and all moving or vibrating parts.
