CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Inspection Before Disassembly of Carrier

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED
Description Tool Number
Pinion Depth Gauge T79P-4020-A

The differential case (4204) assemblies and drive pinion should be inspected before they are removed from the rear axle housing (4010) . These inspections can find the cause of the condition and determine the resolution needed.

  1. Wipe lubricant from internal working parts and visually inspect parts for wear and/or damage.
  1. Rotate gears to see if there is any roughness which would indicate worn or damaged bearings or gears.
  1. Check ring gear teeth for signs of scoring, abnormal wear or nicks/chips.
  1. Set up a Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C as outlined and check ring gear backlash and ring gear backface runout. Refer to Specifications.
  1. Do not check for gear tooth contact pattern. A contact pattern is not an acceptable guide to check for noise. Proper gearset assembly must be checked using the Pinion Depth Gauge T79P-4020-A or equivalent which shows correct pinion shim required to ensure acceptable running condition.
