Camshaft

Removal

1. Remove or reposition radiator (8005) , A/C condenser core (19712) and radiator grille (8200) as necessary to provide clearance to remove camshaft (6250) . Remove the engine front cover (6019) and the timing chain.

2. Remove the intake manifolds (9424) and related parts.

3. Remove the valve covers (6582) . Loosen the rocker arm seat bolts and rotate the rocker arms (6564) to the side.

4. Remove the push rods (6565) and valve tappets (6500) as outlined.

    CAUTION: Use caution to avoid damaging the camshaft bearings when removing camshaft .

5. Remove the camshaft thrust plate (6269) . Carefully remove the camshaft by pulling toward the front of the engine.

Installation

1. Oil the camshaft journals with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A and apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A to the lobes. Carefully slide the camshaft through the camshaft bearings (6261) . Install the camshaft thrust plate with groove toward the cylinder block (6010) . Check camshaft end play. Refer to Section 03-00. If not within specification, replace camshaft thrust plate .

2. Install the valve tappets and push rods as outlined.

3. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A to the valve stem tips. Lubricate the rocker arms and rocker arm seats (6A528) with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A. Position the rocker arms over the push rods .

4. Install the upper and lower intake manifolds and related parts. Tighten intake manifold bolts in sequence to 31-34 Nm (23-25 lb-ft) for the lower intake manifold and 16-24 Nm (12-18 lb-ft) for the upper intake manifold .

5. Connect fuel charging wiring (9D930) to electronic engine control sensors.

6. Connect the accelerator cable (9A758) . Connect speed control actuator (9A825) (if equipped).

7. Connect the heater water hoses (18472) at the intake manifold . Position and connect the fuel return and supply lines.

8. Replace the crankshaft front seal (6700) . Install the timing chain, engine front cover and related parts.

9. On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, install the A/C condenser core .

10. Install the radiator and connect the upper radiator hose (8260) and lower radiator hose (8286) .

11. Connect the lines to transmission oil cooler (7A095) (automatic transmission).

12. Install the radiator electric motor (8K621) , fan blade (8600) and fan shroud (8146) as an assembly as outlined in Section 03-03.

13. With No. 1 piston (6108) on TDC at the end of the compression stroke, position the distributor (12127) in the cylinder block with the distributor rotor (12200) at the No. 1 firing position.
    
    
    
    

14. If any valve train components have been replaced, perform Valve Clearance Adjustment as outlined.

15. Clean the valve cover and the cylinder head gasket surface. Position the valve cover gaskets (6584) .

16. Position the valve cover on the cylinder heads (6049) . Install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 16-20 Nm (12-15 lb-ft).

17. Install the distributor cap (12106) . Position the ignition wires in the ignition wire separators (12297) on the valve cover attaching stud and connect the ignition wires to the spark plugs (12405) . Refer to Section 03-07A for installation. Connect the ignition wire at the distributor .

18. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. Fill the crankcase with the proper grade and quantity of engine oil. Connect vacuum lines as required.

19. Install the air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) as outlined in Section 03-12.

20. Start engine and operate at fast idle and check all hose connections and gaskets for leaks.
