Engine Front Cover

Removal

  1. Refer to Water Pump Removal. Perform all steps except removal of the water pump (8501) . Leave water pump attached to the engine front cover (6019) .
  1. Drain the crankcase.
  1. Remove the crankshaft pulley (6312) from the crankshaft vibration damper. Remove the damper attaching capscrew and washer. Install Crankshaft Damper Remover T58P-6316-D on the crankshaft vibration damper. Remove the vibration damper.



    NOTE: Cover the front oil pan opening while the engine front cover is off to prevent foreign material from entering the oil pan (6675) .

  1. Remove the oil pan-to-engine front cover attaching bolts. Carefully separate the engine front cover from the oil pan gasket (6710) . Remove the engine front cover and water pump as an assembly.

    If a new engine front cover is to be installed, remove the water pump from the old engine front cover and install it on the new engine front cover .

  1. Discard the engine timing cover gasket (6020) .
  1. Check the timing chain deflection. Replace timing chain and sprockets as required. Refer to Section 03-00.
 

Installation

  1. Clean the engine front cover and the cylinder block gasket surfaces.
  1. Install a new crankshaft front seal (6700) in the engine front cover .
  1. Lubricate the timing chain with clean engine oil XO-10W30-QSP or -DSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M2C153-E.
  1. Coat surface of the oil pan gasket with sealer. Apply Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or BA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M4G92-A and ESE-M4G195-A at the corners.
  1. Coat the gasket surfaces of the cylinder block (6010) and engine front cover with Perfect Seal Sealing Compound B5A-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M18P2-A and ESE-M4G115-A and position a new engine timing cover gasket on the cylinder block .
  1. Position the engine front cover on the cylinder block . Use care when installing the engine front cover to avoid seal damage or possible gasket mislocation.
  1. Install the cylinder front cover to seal alignment tool into proper position.
  1. It may be necessary to force the engine front cover downward to slightly compress the oil pan gasket . This operation can be facilitated by using Front Cover Aligner T61P-6019-B.
  1. Coat the threads of the retaining bolts with oil-resistant Pipe Sealant with Teflon® D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESG-M4G194-A and ESR-M18P7-A and install the bolts. While pushing in on the alignment tool, tighten the oil pan-to-engine front retaining bolts to 12-16 Nm (110-144 lb-in).
  1. Tighten the engine front cover-to-cylinder block retaining bolts to 16-24 Nm (12-18 lb-ft). Remove the pilot.



  1. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A to the crankshaft front seal rubbing surface of the vibration damper inner hub to prevent damage to the crankshaft front seal . Apply Silicone Gasket and Sealant F1AZ-19562-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G320-A2 to the keyway before installing on the crankshaft (6303) .
  1. Line up the crankshaft vibration damper keyway with the crankshaft key (6B316) on the crankshaft . Install the vibration damper on the crankshaft using Crankshaft Sprocket and Damper Replacer T52L-6306-AEE. Install the capscrew and washer. Tighten the bolt to 149-176 Nm (110-130 lb-ft). Install the crankshaft pulley .
  1. Refer to Water Pump Installation. Perform all the required steps except installation of the water pump .
  1. Fill the crankcase with the proper grade and quantity of engine oil.
  1. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.
  1. Operate the engine at fast idle. Check for engine coolant and oil leaks.
