IN-VEHICLE SERVICE

Valve Spring, Retainer and Valve Stem Seal

Provided damage has not occurred, broken valve springs (6513) or damaged valve spring retainer sleeves (6517) and valve spring retainers (6514) may be replaced without removing the cylinder head (6049) .

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED
Description Tool Number
Valve Spring Compressor T70P-6049-A
Valve Stem Seal Replacer T87L-6571-BH

Removal

  1. Remove the valve cover (6582) and the applicable spark plug (12405) . Ensure the piston (6108) is at the top of its stroke with both valves closed to prevent accidental dropping of the valve into the cylinder.
  1. Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply. Failure of the air pressure to hold the valve(s) closed while performing the following steps is an indication of valve or valve seat damage and necessitates removal of the cylinder head .
  1. Remove the rocker arm seat bolts. Remove the rocker arm seat (6A528) , rocker arm (6564) , rocker arm fulcrum guide (6A588) and push rods (6565) from the applicable cylinder and note their positions so they can be installed in their original positions.
  1. Install the rocker arm seat bolt and position Valve Spring Compressor T70P-6049-A. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys (6518) , valve spring retainer sleeve, valve spring retainer and valve spring .

NOTE: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening but will still allow enough travel to check the valve for binds.

  1. Remove and discard the valve stem seal (6571) .

Installation

CAUTION: If the valve has been damaged, it will be necessary to remove the cylinder head for service.

  1. Remove air pressure from spark plug adapter. Inspect the valve stem for damage. Rotate the valve and check the valve stem tip for eccentric movement during rotation. Move the valve up and down through normal travel in the valve guide and check the stem for binds.
  1. If the condition of the valve is satisfactory, apply Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A to the valve stem and hold the valve closed. Apply the air pressure within the cylinder.
  1. Install new exhaust valve stem seals . Use a 5/8-inch deep well socket and a light hammer or mallet to seat the valve stem seal on the valve guide using Valve Stem Seal Replacer T87L-6571-BH. Place the valve spring in position over the valve and install the valve spring retainer and valve spring retainer sleeve , (if equipped). Compress the valve spring and install the valve spring retainer key . Remove the compressor tool and rocker arm seat bolt.
  1. Turn OFF the air pressure and remove the air line and adapter. Install the spark plug .
  1. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A to both ends of the push rods . Install the push rods . Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A to the tip of the valve stems.
  1. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A to the push rod socket, underside of the rocker arm seat and the valve pad or roller of the rocker arm . Install the rocker arm fulcrum guides , rocker arms , and rocker arm seats or roller rocker arms and bolts. Tighten bolts to 24-34 Nm (18-25 lb-ft).
  1. Clean and install the valve cover using a new valve cover gasket (6584) .

If the RH valve cover was removed, install the crankcase ventilation tube (6758) . Install valve cover gasket and tighten bolts to 16-20 Nm (12-15 lb-ft).

  1. Run the engine and check for leaks.
