Timing Chain, Sprockets, Tensioners and Guides

 

Removal

  1. Remove engine front cover (6019) as outlined.
  1. Remove camshaft sprocket retainer bolt and washer from end of the camshaft (6250) .
  1. Remove distributor drive gear (6255).

    NOTE: If crankshaft sprocket (6306) is difficult to remove, pry crankshaft sprocket off shaft using a pair of large screwdrivers positioned on both sides of the crankshaft sprocket .

  1. Remove camshaft sprocket (6256), crankshaft sprocket and timing chain.

    NOTE: The engine front cover contains the oil pump gears and water pump (8501) . If a new engine front cover is to be installed, remove the water pump and oil pump gears from the old engine front cover . Refer to Engine Front Cover.





  1. Remove timing chain vibration damper (6284) (three bolts) from front of cylinder block (6010) . (This requires pulling back on ratcheting mechanism, then installing pin through hole in bracket to relieve tension.)

    A Tighten to 40-50 Nm (30-37 Lb-Ft)
 

Installation

  1. Rotate crankshaft (6303) as necessary to position piston No. 1 at TDC and keyway at the 12 o'clock position.
  1. Lubricate timing chain with engine oil.

    Install camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain. Ensure timing marks line up across from each other.



  1. Install distributor drive gear.
  1. Install bolt and washer assembly at end of camshaft . Tighten to 40-50 Nm (30-37 lb-ft).
  1. Install engine front cover as outlined.
