Valve Cover and Gasket

 

Removal

  1. Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs (12405) .
  1. Remove ignition wire routing clips from valve cover retaining bolt studs.
  1. Remove upper intake manifold (9424).
  1. If LH valve cover (6582) is being removed, proceed with the following Steps:
    1. Remove oil filler cap (6766).
    1. Remove crankcase ventilation hose (6853).
  1. If RH valve cover is being removed, remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) .
  1. Partially drain cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03.
  1. Disconnect fuel lines. Refer to Section 10-01.
  1. Disconnect heater hose and bracket and position aside.
  1. Remove valve cover retaining screws, valve cover and valve cover gasket (6584) .
 

Installation

NOTE: Lightly oil bolt and stud threads before installation. Using solvent, clean cylinder head (6049) and valve cover sealing surfaces to remove all gasket material and dirt.

  1. Position and install a new valve cover gasket onto valve cover .
  1. Position valve cover on the cylinder head and install retaining bolts. Note location of ignition wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 8.0-11.5 Nm (71-102 lb-in).
  1. If LH valve cover is being installed, proceed with the following steps:
    1. Install oil filler cap.
    1. Install crankcase ventilation tube (6758).
  1. If RH valve cover is being installed, install positive crankcase ventilation valve .
  1. Reconnect fuel lines.
  1. Reconnect heater hose and bracket.
  1. Refill cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03.
  1. Install ignition wire routing clips.
  1. Connect ignition wires to spark plugs.
  1. Start engine and check for oil leaks.
