REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Ignition Switch

 

Functional

The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional ignition switches (11572) . Lock cylinder keys are available for these vehicles, or the lock cylinder key numbers are known and the proper key can be made.

 

Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Turn lock cylinder key to RUN position.
  1. Place a 3.17mm (1/8-inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in hole in upper steering column shroud (3530) under ignition switch . Press retaining pin while pulling out on ignition switch to remove it from lock cylinder housing (22074) .
 

Installation

  1. Install ignition switch by turning it to RUN position and pressing retaining pin. Insert ignition switch into lock cylinder housing . Ensure ignition switch is fully seated and aligned in interlocking washer before turning key to OFF position. This will permit cylinder retaining pin to extend into lock cylinder housing hole.
  1. Rotate ignition switch, using lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
  1. Connect battery ground cable.



 

Non-Functional

The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition switch is inoperative and the ignition switch cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken lock cylinder key, unknown key number, or an ignition switch cap that has been damaged and/or broken to the extent that the key cannot be rotated.

 

Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable .
  1. Remove steering wheel (3600).
  1. Using locking-type pliers, twist ignition switch cap or bezel until it separates from ignition switch .
  1. Using a 3/8-inch diameter drill, drill down middle of key slot ap proximately 44mm (1-3/4 inch) until ignition switch breaks loose from breakaway base of ignition switch . Remove lock cylinder and drill shavings from lock cylinder housing .
  1. Remove steering column upper bearing retainer (3C610) , steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) , ignition switch and steering column lock gear (3E717) . Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from casting.
  1. Carefully inspect lock cylinder housing for damage from the above operation. If damage is apparent, lock cylinder housing must be replaced.
 

Installation

  1. Replace lock cylinder housing, if damaged.
  1. Install steering column lock gear and ignition switch as outlined.
  1. Install trim and electrical parts.
  1. Install new ignition switch as outlined.
  1. Install steering wheel as outlined.
  1. Check ignition switch operation.
