REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Lock Cylinder Housing

 

Removal

  1. Turn ignition switch (11572) to RUN position. Using a 1/8-inch drift, press lock cylinder retaining pin through access hole and remove ignition switch .

    Carefully note the position of the steering column upper bearing retainer (3C610) prior to removal.

  1. Remove blue plastic steering column upper bearing retainer by inserting a screwdriver or similar tool, with a 90 degree bend on the tip, between steering column upper bearing retainer and steering column lock housing bearing (3E700) and prying upward.
  1. Insert tip of a screwdriver into Double-D slot of steering column lock housing bearing , then rotate 90 degrees. Remove steering column lock housing bearing (stamped steel).
  1. Remove steering column lock gear (3E717) . Carefully note relationship of steering column lock gear to position of rack teeth.
 

Installation

  1. Position steering column lock gear in base of lock cylinder housing (22074) in the same position as that noted during removal procedure. The position of steering column lock gear is correct if last tooth on steering column lock gear is meshed with last tooth on rack.
  1. Position steering column upper bearing retainer in lock cylinder housing . Insert tip of a screwdriver into Double-D slot of steering column lock housing bearing , then rotate 90 degrees.
  1. Press blue plastic steering column upper bearing retainer into lock cylinder housing . Ensure steering column upper bearing retainer is in its original position.
  1. Line up flats of steering column lock gear with flats of washer by pulling down on the steering column lock cam (3E695) .
  1. Install ignition switch assembly.
  1. Check for proper start in PARK and NEUTRAL. Also, check to ensure start circuit cannot be actuated in DRIVE or REVERSE positions and the steering column tube (3514) is locked in LOCK position.
