Reservoir, Power Steering

Take the following precautions when servicing the power steering oil reservoir (3A697) :

• Use a clean work bench and tools.
• Plug the inlet and outlet openings of the power steering pump (3A674) with plugs or masking tape.
• Thoroughly clean the exterior of the power steering pump with solvent.

Removal

1. Place the power steering pump assembly in a bench vise with soft jaws and remove the outlet fitting, flow control valve and spring. Discard all seals.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

    CAUTION: Do not hammer on the power steering oil reservoir or damage to power steering oil reservoir will occur.

2. Remove the fiberglass power steering oil reservoir by twisting side-to-side and lifting.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

3. Discard o-ring seal (9229) on pump power steering pump housing (3A643) .
   
   
   
   

Installation

 CAUTION: Do not twist the O-ring seal as it will stick, grab, bind or leak.

1. Install a new o-ring seal on the power steering pump housing .

2. Apply petroleum jelly to the reservoir o-ring seal and the inside edge of the power steering oil reservoir .

3. Place the power steering oil reservoir over the power steering pump and align the outlet fitting hole in the power steering oil reservoir with the hole in the valve cover.

    CAUTION: If the valve is cocked, it may become stuck in the valve cover. Do not force the valve forward. Forcing the valve may shear off metal and carry the metal chips into the valve bore.

4. Place new o-ring seals on the outlet fitting. Install the flow control spring, flow control valve and outlet fitting into the power steering oil reservoir and valve cover. Tighten the fitting to 34-46 Nm (25-34 lb-ft).
