REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Clutch Release Cable

 CAUTION: Whenever the clutch release lever cable (7535) is disconnected for any reason such as transmission/transaxle removal, clutch pedal (7519) components or clutch release lever cable replacement, it is imperative that the proper method for installing the clutch release lever cable be followed. Improper installation may damage components or cause system failure.

 

Removal

  1. Lift the clutch pedal to its upward most position to disengage the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft (7506) . Push the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft forward, unhook the clutch release lever cable from the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft and allow it to slowly swing rearward.
  1. Open the hood (16612) . Remove the screw retaining cable assembly insulator to the dash panel (01610) .
  1. Pull the clutch release lever cable through the dash panel and into the engine compartment. Remove cable bracket screw from fender apron.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Remove the clutch release lever dust shield (7513) from the clutch housing.
  1. Remove the C-clip retaining clutch release lever cable assembly to the clutch housing.
  1. Slide the ball on the end of the clutch release lever cable assembly through the hole in the clutch release shaft (7515) and remove the cable.
 

Installation

 CAUTION: The clutch pedal must be lifted to disengage the adjusting mechanism during clutch release lever cable installation. Failure to do so will result in damage to the self-adjuster mechanism.

Under no circumstances should a prying instrument such as a screwdriver or a pry bar be used to install the clutch release lever cable into the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft .

  1. Install the clutch release lever cable in vehicle to establish clutch release lever cable routing.
  1. Insert the clutch release lever cable through the hole in the clutch housing and through the hole in the clutch release shaft . Slide the ball on the end of the clutch release lever cable assembly into cable ball pocket on clutch release shaft .
  1. Install the C-clip to retain the clutch release lever cable assembly to the clutch housing.
  1. Install cable bracket screw in fender apron. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
  1. Lower vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Push the clutch release lever cable assembly into the hole in the dash panel and secure the insulator with a screw. Tighten to 3.5-4.5 Nm (31-39 lb-in).
  1. Install the clutch release lever cable assembly by lifting the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft . Then pushing the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft forward, hook the end of the clutch release lever cable over the rear of the clutch and brake pedal pivot shaft .
  1. Raise vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02. See that the ball of the clutch release lever cable is still seated in the ball pocket of the release lever.
  1. Install the clutch release lever dust shield on the clutch housing. Lower vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Press clutch pedal several times to seat the clutch release lever cable and lift up on the clutch pedal to complete the adjustment.
