Clutch System

The primary function of the clutch system is to couple and uncouple engine power to the transmission upon driver command. For additional information, refer to Section 08-00.

• Clutch disc (7550): An assembly retained to the transmission shaft with a splined hub. The clutch disc has friction material on both side where it contacts the flywheel (6375) and clutch pressure plate (7563) .
• Clutch pressure plate: Applies pressure against the clutch disc holding it tightly against the surface of the engine flywheel .
• Cover: Part of clutch pressure plate .
• Clutch release hub and bearing (7548): Constantly engaged with release fingers provides connection between release fingers and clutch release shaft (7515) .
• Clutch release shaft: Imparts clutch pedal motion to clutch release hub and bearing via clutch release lever cable (7535) .
• Release Fingers: Part of clutch pressure plate . Movement toward flywheel removes clamp load from clutch disc .
• Input shaft bushing (7120): Supports outboard end of transmission input shaft (7017) and is required for relative rotation between engine and transmission.
• Damper Springs: Part of the clutch disc . Required for absorbing engine pulses.
• Flywheel: Bolted to engine crankshaft (6303) and rotates with the crankshaft . It is machined to provide a friction surface of the clutch disc when the clutch is engaged. This forms a continuous system by which engine power is connected to the transmission.
