SYMPTOM CHART: CLUTCH DIAGNOSIS
ConditionPossible SourceAction
  • Chirp or Squeak When Clutch Pedal is Up
  • Pedal linkage.
  • Service or replace linkage parts ( clutch release lever cable, clutch release shaft , tension spring, clutch pedal assembly). Lubricate with Motorcraft Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or XG-1-K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B all linkage pivot points.

  • Scrubbing of unlubricated release lever pivot due to out-of-plane clutch pressure plate fingers.
  • Lubricate all pivot points.
  • Tighten clutch pressure plate retaining bolts. Refer to Section 08-01.

  • Insufficient preload on clutch release hub and bearing .
  • Fluid Leakage
  • Clutch Master Cylinder.

  • Tubes.
    • Clutch Chatters During Engagement
    • Loose engine mounts and number 3 crossmember mounting.

    • Oil on clutch disc . Burned or glazed.
    • Correct leak and install new clutch disc . Refer to Section 08-01.
    • Clutch is Noisy When Clutch Pedal is Depressed, Noise Continues as Long as the Clutch Pedal is Held Down
    • Damaged clutch release hub and bearing .
    • Remove transmission and replace clutch release hub and bearing . Inspect the release fingers and replace the clutch pressure plate assembly as required.

    • Flywheel housing out of alignment.
    • Check flywheel housing to engine crankshaft alignment. Replace flywheel housing if necessary.

    • Improper engagement between transmission pilot and flywheel housing.
    • Check for proper pilot engagement into flywheel housing . Service or replace as required.
    • Clutch Does Not Disengage Properly
    • Cable release linkage outside flywheel housing worn, cracked, bent or hydraulic control malfunctioning.
    • Service or replace linkage parts as required. Refer to Section 08-02.

    • Damaged internal components.
    • Remove transmission. Verify torque of clutch pressure plate bolts.
    • Check for damaged or worn clutch, clutch pressure plate , clutch release hub and bearing , clutch release shaft or release lever pilot.
    • Check for warped or contaminated clutch disc .
    • Check engine crankshaft pilot bearing for lack of lubrication, damage or binding condition with input shaft .
    • Check clutch disc hub spline for free movement on input shaft spline. Service or replace as required.

    • Clutch drag.
    • Vehicle Will Not Start With Clutch Pedal Fully Pressed
    • Improper adjustment of clutch pedal position switch , damaged clutch pedal position switch or open or short circuited wiring.
    • Clutch Slips After Clutch Pedal is Fully Released
    • Cable release linkage binding.

    • Damaged internal components.
    • Remove transmission. Service or replace clutch release shaft, clutch release hub and bearing , transmission main drive gear bearing retainer . Check clutch pressure plate and clutch disc for wear and contamination. Replace as required.

    • Worn clutch.

      • Clutch "Squeaks" or "Scrubs" When Clutch Pedal is in Motion
      • Cable release linkage and/or cable—lack of lubrication, binding, interference, worn or kinked.
      • Lubricate linkage, service or replace as required.
      • Replace clutch release lever cable . Do not lubricate clutch release lever cable .

      • Lack of lubrication on the clutch release lever pivot and lever to release bearing contact.
      • Remove transmission and clutch release hub and bearing . Lubricate accordingly.

      • Lack of lubrication in the clutch release bearing bore and the transmission.
      • Lubricate accordingly.

      • Flywheel housing out of alignment.
      • Check alignment after ascertaining that flywheel housing is properly positioned on flywheel housing to block dowel , and retaining bolts are properly tightened. Replace flywheel housing if necessary.
      • Clicking Noise When Pressing Clutch Pedal
