DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Shift Interlock System

A shift interlock mechanism is used on vehicles with an automatic transmission. This is to prevent shifting the automatic transmission out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal (2455) is pressed.

The system consists of:

The solenoid is energized when the ignition switch (11572) is turned to the ON position, locking the shifter in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the shift solenoid (7G484) is deactivated and the shifter can be moved out of the PARK position.
