REMOVAL

Transmission

Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01.
  1. Working inside vehicle, remove gearshift lever boot (7277) and console panel gear shift plate (044G24) to expose two gearshift lever bolts.
  1. Remove two gearshift bolts, gearshift lever and isolator from transmission stub shaft.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Mark the driveshaft (4602) so that it may be installed in the same position. Disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle universal joint flange (4851) . Slide the driveshaft off the transmission output and fifth gear drive shaft (7061) and install Extension Housing Seal Replacer T61L-7657-A into the extension housing (7A039) to prevent lubricant leakage.
  1. Remove the four bolts retaining the dual converter Y pipe (5F250) . Remove dual converter Y pipe .
  1. Remove the two nuts retaining the rear transmission support to the rear engine support (6A023) . Remove bolts.
  1. Support the engine and transmission (7003) with a transmission jack.
  1. Remove the two nuts from the rear engine support bolts. Remove bolts, raise jack slightly and remove rear engine support .
  1. Lower transmission to expose the two bolts securing the shift control selector lever and housing (7210) . Using a socket, remove the two nuts and bolts. Remove shift control selector lever and housing .
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness from the backup lamp switch (15520) .
  1. Remove the bolt from the speedometer cable (17260) and remove speedometer drive gear (7G237) from the transmission .
  1. Remove the four bolts retaining transmission to the flywheel housing (6392) .

     CAUTION: Do not press the clutch pedal (7519) while the transmission is removed or damage could result to transmission .

  1. Move the transmission and jack rearward until the transmission input shaft (7017) clears the flywheel housing . If necessary, lower the engine (6007) enough to obtain clearance for transmission removal.
