Grease or any other foreign material must be kept off the brake shoe and lining (2001)
surfaces of the rotor and external surfaces of the hub
during service operations. In handling the rotor and caliper assemblies, avoid
deformation of the brake rotor and nicking or scratching of brake shoe and lining
.
If a wheel cylinder piston (2196)
is removed for any reason, the piston seal must be
replaced. Exercise care not to damage plastic wheel cylinder piston
by protecting it from contact with any metal or sharp
objects.
CAUTION: Do not pry on plastic wheel cylinder piston
with a screwdriver or other tools, as this will cause
chipping.
During removal and installation of a wheel (1007)
assembly, exercise care not to interfere with the front disc brake rotor shield (2K005)
or the bleeder screw fitting.
Front wheel bearing (1215) end play is critical and must be within
specification.
To avoid bending or damaging the front disc brake rotor shield
on full right or left wheel
turns, the vehicle must be
centered on the hoist before servicing any front end components.
The wheel
and tire must be removed separately from the front disc brake rotor (1125)
, unlike drum brakes where the wheel
, tire and brake drum (1126)
can
be removed as a unit.
Do not attempt to clean or restore any oil or grease-soaked brake shoes and linings
. When contaminated linings are found, they
must be
replaced in complete axle sets.
Always replace rubber caliper pin insulators when replacing linings. Do not lubricate the disc brake caliper locating pins (2B296)
.
Disc brake caliper locating pin must be hand-started into front wheel spindle (3105)
before tightening. This is to ensure that the large
diameter of pin is through outer shoe holes to prevent binding or bending. Be
careful not to damage the rubber caliper pin insulator when inserting the slide
pins.
