CLEANING AND INSPECTION

U-Joint Flange

Ensure that the surfaces of the rear axle universal joint flange (4851) have not been damaged in removing the driveshaft (4602) or in removing the rear axle universal joint flange from the axle. The end of the flange that contacts the front pinion bearing inner race or rear axle drive pinion shaft oil slinger (4670) , as well as the flat surface of the pinion nut counterbore, must be smooth. Polish these surfaces, if necessary. Roughness aggravates backlash noises and causes wear of the rear axle universal joint flange and pinion nut, with a resultant loss in pinion bearing preload.
