Section 04-04: Wheels and Tires | 1994 Mustang Workshop Manual |
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Wheel and Tire
WARNING: NEVER RUN THE ENGINE WITH ONE WHEEL OFF THE GROUND, SUCH AS WHEN
CHANGING A TIRE. THE WHEEL STILL ON THE GROUND COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO MOVE.
NOTE: Extended use of other than matching size spare tires on a Traction-Lok
rear axle could result in a permanent reduction in effectiveness. This loss of
effectiveness does not affect normal driving and should not be noticeable to
the driver.
Removal
- Remove wheel hub cap (1130)
as outlined. Loosen but do not remove wheel hub bolt nuts (1012)
.
- Raise vehicle until the tire clears the floor.
- Remove wheel hub bolt nuts
as outlined. Remove anti-theft wheel locks
if so equipped. Pull the wheel (1007)
off the wheel hub (1104)
.
CAUTION: Do not use heat to loosen a frozen wheel
because heat can shorten the life of the wheel
and damage the front wheel bearings (1215)
.
- If corrosion has formed around the center pilot hole so that the wheel
cannot be removed by hand, use a wheel puller to remove
the frozen wheel.
Installation
- Clean all dirt and corrosion from the hub mounting surface and center pilot
hole of the wheel
. Apply a thin film of Disc Brake Caliper Slide Grease
D7AZ-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C172-A to the axle
pilot flange to preclude corrosion.
- Place wheel
on the wheel hub
. Install the locking wheelcover pedestal (if used) and wheel hub bolt nuts
. Tighten them alternately to draw the wheel
evenly against the wheel hub
.
- Lower vehicle. Tighten the wheel hub bolt nuts
to 115-142 Nm (85-105
lb-ft).
