REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Wheel and Tire

WARNING: NEVER RUN THE ENGINE WITH ONE WHEEL OFF THE GROUND, SUCH AS WHEN CHANGING A TIRE. THE WHEEL STILL ON THE GROUND COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO MOVE.

NOTE: Extended use of other than matching size spare tires on a Traction-Lok rear axle could result in a permanent reduction in effectiveness. This loss of effectiveness does not affect normal driving and should not be noticeable to the driver.

Removal

  1. Remove wheel hub cap (1130) as outlined. Loosen but do not remove wheel hub bolt nuts (1012) .
  1. Raise vehicle until the tire clears the floor.
  1. Remove wheel hub bolt nuts as outlined. Remove anti-theft wheel locks if so equipped. Pull the wheel (1007) off the wheel hub (1104) .

CAUTION: Do not use heat to loosen a frozen wheel because heat can shorten the life of the wheel and damage the front wheel bearings (1215) .

  1. If corrosion has formed around the center pilot hole so that the wheel cannot be removed by hand, use a wheel puller to remove the frozen wheel.

Installation

  1. Clean all dirt and corrosion from the hub mounting surface and center pilot hole of the wheel . Apply a thin film of Disc Brake Caliper Slide Grease D7AZ-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C172-A to the axle pilot flange to preclude corrosion.
  1. Place wheel on the wheel hub . Install the locking wheelcover pedestal (if used) and wheel hub bolt nuts . Tighten them alternately to draw the wheel evenly against the wheel hub .
  1. Lower vehicle. Tighten the wheel hub bolt nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).
