REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Suspension Arms

 

Upper

Removal

If rear suspension arm and bushing (5500) requires replacement, also replace the other rear suspension arm and bushing .

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist and support body at rear crossmember. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Remove and discard upper arm-to-axle pivot bolt and nut.
  1. Remove and discard upper arm-to-frame pivot bolt and nut. Remove rear suspension arm and bushing from vehicle.
 

Installation

  1. Place the rear suspension arm and bushing into the bracket of body side rail. Insert a new, upper arm-to-frame pivot bolt and nut with nut facing outboard. Do not tighten at this time.
  1. Raise the suspension with hoist until upper arm-to-axle pivot hole is in position with hole in rear suspension arm bushing (5A638) . Install a new pivot bolt and nut with nut facing inboard. Do not tighten at this time.
  1. Raise the suspension to curb height. Tighten the front upper arm bolt to 97-132 Nm (71-97 lb-ft), and the rear upper arm bolt to 97-132 Nm (71-97 lb-ft).
 

Lower

Removal

NOTE: If rear suspension arm and bushing requires replacement, also replace the other rear suspension arm and bushing . If vehicle is equipped with rear stabilizer bar (5A772) , remove rear stabilizer bar .

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and support body at rear crossmember. Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Lower the hoist until the rear shock absorbers (18125) are fully extended.

    NOTE: The rear axle housing (4010) must be supported by the hoist, a transmission jack, or jackstands.

  1. Place a transmission jack under the lower arm-to-axle pivot bolt. Remove and discard the bolt and nut. Lower the transmission jack slowly until the rear spring (5560) can be removed.
  1. Remove and discard the lower arm-to-frame pivot bolt and nut. Remove the rear suspension lower arm (5A649) assembly.
 

Installation

  1. Position the rear suspension lower arm into the front arm bracket. Insert a new, arm-to-frame pivot bolt and nut with nut facing outwards. Do not tighten at this time.
  1. Install rear spring . Holding the rear spring in position, use the transmission jack under the rear of the rear suspension lower arm . Raise the jack until the rear suspension lower arm is in position. Insert a new, arm-to-axle pivot bolt and nut with nut facing outward. Do not tighten at this time.
  1. Lower the transmission jack. Raise the rear axle housing with the hoist to curb height. Tighten the rear suspension lower arm front bolt to 97-132 Nm (71-97 lb-ft), and the rear pivot bolt to 97-132 Nm (71-97 lb-ft).
  1. Install rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Remove crossmember supports and lower vehicle.
