REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Wheel Spindle, Front

 

Removal

  1. Raise the front of vehicle, and position safety stands under both sides at the jacking pads just behind the front suspension lower arms (3078) . Refer to Section 00-02.
  1. Remove the wheel (1007) and tire assembly. If equipped, remove front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204) from front wheel spindle (3105) .
  1. Remove the front disc brake caliper (2B120) , front disc brake rotor (1125) and front disc brake rotor shield (2K005) . Remove wheel hub (1104) . Refer to Section 06-03.
  1. Remove the front stabilizer bar link (5K483) from the front suspension lower arm assembly.
  1. Remove the front wheel spindle connecting rod or end (3A130) from the front wheel spindle with Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.

     CAUTION: Do not remove the nut from the ball joint stud at this time.

  1. Remove and discard the cotter pin from the ball joint stud nut, and loosen the ball joint nut one or two turns.
  1. Tap the spindle boss sharply to relieve the stud pressure.
  1. Place a floor jack under the front suspension lower arm , compress the front coil spring (5310) as outlined in Front Spring Removal and Installation. Remove the stud nut. Remove front anti-lock sensor bracket. Save nut for installation.
  1. Remove and discard the two bolts and nuts retaining the front wheel spindle to the front shock absorber (18124) . Compress the front shock absorber until working clearance is obtained.
  1. Remove the front wheel spindle .
 

Installation

  1. Place the front wheel spindle on the ball joint stud, and install the stud nut. Do not tighten at this time.
  1. Lower the front shock absorber until the mounting holes align with the holes in the front wheel spindle . Install two new bolts and nuts.
  1. Tighten the ball joint stud nut to 148-202 Nm (109-149 lb-ft), and install a new cotter pin.
  1. Tighten the front shock absorber to front wheel spindle retaining nuts to 191-258 Nm (141-191 lb-ft).
  1. Install the front stabilizer bar link . Tighten the retaining bolt and nut to 16-22 Nm (11-16 lb-ft).
  1. Lower the floor jack from under the front suspension lower arm , and remove the jack.
  1. Attach the front wheel spindle connecting rod or end . Tighten the retaining nut to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
  1. Install wheel hub and front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) . Tighten to 300-400 Nm (221-295 lb-ft).
  1. Install anti-lock brake sensor bracket by positioning holes over studs. Tighten nut to 23-32 Nm (17-23 lb-ft).
  1. Install front brake anti-lock sensor .
  1. Install the front disc brake rotor shield , front disc brake rotor and front disc brake caliper . Refer to Section 06-03.
  1. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten wheel hub bolt nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).
  1. Remove the safety stands and lower vehicle.
  1. Check front wheel alignment and adjust if out of specification. Refer to Section 04-00.
