SERVICE PROCEDURES

Timing Chain Deflection

  1. Remove the RH valve cover (6582) as outlined.
  1. Loosen the No. 1 exhaust rocker arm (6564) and rotate to one side.
  1. Install Rotunda Dial Indicator with Bracketry 014-00282 with Cupshaped Adapter TOOL-6565-AB or equivalent on the end of the push rod (6565) .
  1. Turn the crankshaft (6303) clockwise until No. 1 piston (6108) is at TDC off the exhaust cycle. The damper timing mark should point to TDC on the timing degree indicator. This will also take up the slack on the LH side of the timing chain.



  1. Zero the dial indicator.
  1. Slowly turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the slightest movement is seen on the dial indicator. Stop, and observe the damper timing mark for the number of degrees of travel from TDC.



  1. If the reading on the timing degree indicator exceeds six degrees, replace the timing chain and camshaft sprockets (6256) / crankshaft sprockets (6306) .
