Section 01-20B: Restraints, Passive—Supplemental Air Bag System | 1993 Mustang Workshop Manual |
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
No Air Bag Indicator
Inoperative Lamp Circuit Or No Ignition Voltage To Diagnostic Monitor
Normal Operation
The air bag indicator is designed to light for 6 (±
2) seconds when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. This initial 6
seconds of air bag indicator illumination (continuous lamp) is considered
normal operation and is called "prove-out" of the air bag indicator.
The diagnostic monitor requires power at Pin 1 or 6 in order to energize
the air bag indicator circuit. If the air bag indicator circuit is open or the
diagnostic monitor does not have ignition voltage at Pin 1 or 6, the air bag
indicator will not light.
Possible Causes
A No Air Bag Indicator condition can be caused by:
- A burned out bulb or open wiring in the air bag indicator
circuit.
- Loss of ignition voltage at Pins 1 or 6 of the diagnostic
monitor.

NAB-1 CHECK FOR IGNITION VOLTAGE
- Disconnect diagnostic monitor.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- Measure voltage between Pins 1 (+) and 3 (-).
Is voltage measured equal to battery voltage?
Yes
GO to NAB-2.
No
SERVICE open Circuit 640 (R/Y) in "HOT IN RUN" circuit from
fuse panel. CHECK Fuse 18. CHECK for proper ground on Pin 3 of diagnostic
monitor connector. RECONNECT system. VERIFY system. REACTIVATE system.
NAB-2 CHECK FOR OPEN LAMP CIRCUIT
- Leave diagnostic monitor disconnected and key ignition switch in RUN.
Yes
REPLACE diagnostic monitor. RECONNECT system. VERIFY system.
REACTIVATE system.
No
LOCATE and SERVICE open circuit in air bag indicator Circuit
608 (BK/Y) or 640 (R/Y). CHECK for burned out or loose bulb. RECONNECT system.
VERIFY system. REACTIVATE system.
