Compressor Drive Belt Tension

Tools Required:

2.3L Engine

  1. Check the belt tension with Belt Tension Gauge T63L-8620-A. The belt tension should be within specification.
  1. If the belt tension is not within specification, loosen the two idler arm pulley retaining bolts until they are just snug.
  1. Insert the end of a 1/2-inch flex-handle or ratchet into the square hole in the idler arm and apply pressure to the idler arm with the flex-handle or ratchet until the belt tension is within specification. Then, tighten the idler arm retaining bolts to 41-61 Nm (31-44 lb-ft), while holding pressure on the idler arm.
  1. Remove the belt tension gauge and the flex-handle or ratchet.

5.0L Engine

The 5.0L engine uses a serpentine drive belt. This belt arrangement provides an automatic belt tensioner in its pulley circuit, designed to eliminate the need for belt adjustment. If an abnormal condition should develop, refer to Section 03-05 for the applicable procedure.
