REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Module, Air Bag

 

Removal

NOTE: If the air bag did not deploy in a collision, it may not have been needed. Complete all diagnosis before replacing the air bag module. See Deactivation/Reactivation procedures.

 WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT NECESSARY FOR SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY. TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE MUST BE DISCONNECTED PRIOR TO SERVICING OR REPLACING ANY SYSTEM COMPONENTS.

  1. Disconnect positive battery cable and wait one minute for backup positive supply to be depleted.
  1. Remove four nut and washer assemblies retaining air bag module to steering wheel.
  1. Disconnect the air bag electrical connector from contact assembly. Remove air bag assembly.



 

Installation

  1. Connect the air bag module wiring connector to clockspring connector.
  1. Position air bag module to steering wheel and secure with four nut and washer assemblies. Tighten to 2.7-3.7 Nm (24-32 lb-in).
  1. Connect positive battery ground cable.
  1. Verify air bag indicator.
