REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Lock Cylinder Housing

 

Removal

  1. Remove the steering column assembly as outlined.
  1. Remove two screws retaining turn signal switch to the lock cylinder housing, and remove switch.
  1. Remove the multi-function switch by removing two screws.
  1. Remove the upper steering shaft bearing.
  1. Remove the two bolts connecting the lock cylinder housing to the outer tube flange bracket. Lift the casting off the upper steering shaft.
  1. Remove ignition lock drive gear.
 

Installation

  1. Install ignition lock drive gear and actuator.

     CAUTION: A new bearing must be installed if the shaft bearing is removed for any reason.

  1. Install the upper steering shaft bearing and sleeve in the lock cylinder housing, and install the upper bearing retainer plate.
  1. Prick punch steering column upper shaft diameter sufficiently to ensure an interference fit between bearing inner race and steering column upper shaft. Place lock cylinder housing onto steering column flange bracket with upper steering shaft protruding through the upper bearing. Install and tighten two bolts retaining lock cylinder housing to bracket to 17-28 Nm (12-21 lb-ft).
  1. Place a piece of pipe 19.05mm (0.75 inch) inside diameter by 88.9mm (3.5 inch) long over the end of the steering column upper shaft and install the steering wheel retaining bolt.
  1. Tighten steering wheel retaining bolt until steering shaft is drawn up into bearing enough to allow installation of snap ring in groove on shaft. Remove steering wheel retaining bolt and piece of pipe.
  1. Install snap ring in groove on upper shaft.
  1. Install the turn signal switch with two self-tapping screws.
  1. Install the wash/wipe switch with two self-tapping screws.
  1. Install the steering column as outlined.
