DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Diagnosis Procedures

Troubleshooting the automatic transmission is simplified by using the proven method of diagnosis. One of the most important things to remember is that there is a definite procedure to follow. Do not take short cuts or assume that critical checks or adjustments have already been made.

The following procedures are recommended for checking and/or verifying that the various components are adjusted and operating properly. Use Rotunda Automatic Transmission Tester 007-00085 or equivalent. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Preliminary Inspection

The following items must be checked before proceeding:

  1. Check Fluid Level/Condition
  1. Vehicle at Normal Operating Temperature
  1. Visual Inspection of Harness Connections/Wiring
  1. Were On-Board Diagnostics Run?
  1. Check for Leaks
  1. Check for Electronic Add-On Items
  1. Check for Vehicle Modifications
  1. Check Shift Linkage for Proper Adjustment
  1. Validate Customer Concern (when does condition occur?)
    1. Upshift
    1. Downshift
    1. Coasting
    1. Engagement
    1. Noise/Vibration
    1. Determine if noise/vibration is related to the following:
      1. RPM Dependent
      1. Vehicle Speed Dependent
      1. Shift Dependent
      1. Gear Dependent

Verification of Condition

This section provides information which must be used in both determining the actual cause of customer concerns and performing the appropriate service procedures.

The following procedures must be used when verifying customer concerns for A4LD Transmission:

  1. Required equipment:
    1. Automatic Transmission Tester 007-00085 or equivalent
    1. SUPER STAR II Tester 007-0041A or equivalent
    1. Digital Volt Ohmmeter 105-00053 or equivalent
    1. 60-Pin Breakout Box T83L-50 EEC-IV
  1. Determine customer concerns relative to vehicle usage:
    1. Hot or cold vehicle operating temperature
    1. Hot or cold ambient temperatures
    1. Type of terrain
    1. Vehicle loaded/unloaded
    1. City/highway driving

NOTE: Some A4LD transmission concerns may cause engine concerns.

  1. Fluid level and condition.
  1. Road test vehicle to verify customer concern.

NOTE: Inspect vehicle for non-Ford approved add-on devices such as:

    1. Air conditioning
    1. Engine turbos
    1. Cellular telephones
    1. Cruise controls
    1. CB radios
    1. Linear boosters
    1. Backup alarm signals
    1. Computers

These items, if not installed properly, will affect PCM function. Pay particular attention to add-on wiring splices in the PCM or transmission wiring harness or abnormal tire size.

After a road test, with the vehicle warm and before disturbing any connectors, perform the EEC-IV Quick Test using SUPER STAR II Tester 007-0041A or equivalent. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.
