Axle Shaft, Removal

NOTE: Whenever replacing the rear axle lubricant, use Rear Axle Lubricant XY-90-QL (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent.

1. Raise vehicle and remove rear wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Section 00-02. Remove brake drums.

2. Clean all dirt from area of carrier cover with a wire brush and/or cloth.

3. Drain rear axle lubricant by removing the housing cover.

4. Remove differential pinion shaft lock bolt and differential pinion shaft.
   
   
   
   

5. Push flanged end of axle shafts toward center of vehicle and remove C-lock from button end of the axle shaft.
   
   
   
   

6. Remove axle shaft from housing, being careful not to damage the oil seal.

Seal and/or Bearing Replacement

Tools Required:

• Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A
• Axle Tube Seal Replacer T78P-1177-A
• Axle Tube Bearing Replacer T78P-1225-A
• Rear Axle Bearing Remover T85L-1225-AH

1. Insert Rear Axle Bearing Remover T85L-1225-AH in bore and position it behind bearing so tangs on tool engage bearing outer race. Remove bearing and seal as a unit, using Impact Slide Hammer T50T-100-A.
   
   
   
   

2. Lubricate the new bearing with rear axle lubricant and install the bearing into the housing bore using Axle Tube Bearing Replacer T78P-1225-A.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

    CAUTION: Installation of bearing or seal assembly without proper tool may result in an early bearing or seal failure. If seal becomes cocked in bore during installation, remove it and install a new one.

3. Install axle shaft seal using Axle Tube Seal Replacer T78P-1177-A. Apply Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent between the lips of the seal.

4. Ensure axle vent is not plugged with debris.
