REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Air Filter Element—Replacement

Refer to Section 00-03 for the Emissions Systems Maintenance Schedule for frequency of filter inspection and/or replacement.

 

Removal

  1. Disconnect all hoses and tubes. Remove screws on 2.3L engines (clamps on 5.0L engines) as necessary to remove the air cleaner lid.
  1. Remove air filter element.
 

Inspection

Visually inspect the element and the air cleaner cover and body for signs of dust or dirt leaking through holes in the filter media or past the end seals. Place a light on the inside (clean side) of the filter and look through the filter at the light. Even the smallest hole is cause for replacement.

Also check the element for deformed seals or for charred (burned) or brittle spots that could fail under engine operation and cause a hole. Discoloration only, is not a cause for replacement.

 

Installation

  1. Wipe all inside surfaces of the air cleaner body and cover. Install the air filter element.
  1. Position air cleaner cover on the air cleaner body.
  1. Install clamps, if so equipped, and tighten to 1.4-2.5 Nm (13-22 lb-in).
  1. On 2.3L MFI engines, connect the vacuum hoses that were disconnected during removal of the air cleaner lid.
