REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Ignition Control Module (ICM)

 

Removal

  1. Using a screwdriver, remove distributor cap and position it and attached wires aside so as not to interfere with work area.
  1. Remove ICM harness connector.
  1. Remove distributor from engine.
  1. Place distributor on work bench. Remove two ICM retaining screws.

     CAUTION: Do not attempt to lift ICM from mounting surface prior to moving entire ICM toward distributor flange as pins will break at distributor/module connector.

  1. Pull RH side of ICM down distributor mounting flange and back up to disengage ICM terminals from connector in distributor base. The ICM may be pulled toward flange and away from distributor.
 

Installation

  1. Coat metal base plate of ICM uniformly with silicone compound, approximately 0.79mm (1/32 inch) thick. Use Silicone Dielectric Compound WA-10, D7AZ-19A331-A (ESE-M1C171-A) or equivalent.
  1. Place ICM on distributor base mounting flange.
  1. Carefully position ICM toward distributor bowl and engage three distributor connector pins securely.
  1. Install two ICM retaining screws and tighten to 1.7-4.0 Nm (15-35 lb-in) starting with upper RH screw.
  1. Install distributor on engine.
  1. Install distributor cap. Tighten cap retaining screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 lb-in).
  1. Install ICM harness connector.
  1. Using an induction timing lamp, verify engine timing. Refer to Vehicle Emission Control Information decal located in the engine compartment.
