Valve Rocker Arm Cover and Rocker Arm

Tools Required:

• Spark Plug Wire Remover T74P-6666-A

Removal

1. To remove a valve rocker arm cover from the RH cylinder head, disconnect PCV closure tube from oil fill stand pipe at rocker cover.

2. Remove the secondary air bypass (AIRB) valve and air supply hoses as necessary to provide clearance.

3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs using Spark Plug Wire Remover T74P-6666-A. Do not pull on wire. Remove the wires and bracket assembly from the rocker arm cover attaching stud and position the wires out of the way.

4. Remove upper intake manifold.

5. Remove attaching bolts and remove the cover.

6. Remove the valve rocker arm fulcrum bolt fulcrum seat, rocker arm and guide on Mustang only. On Cobra remove fulcrum bolt, roller rocker arm assembly and pedestal assembly.

Installation

All rocker arms and fulcrum seats are to be lubricated with heavy engine oil SG before installation.

1. Apply Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA (ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-A) or equivalent, to the top of the valve stem and underside of the fulcrum seats.

2. Inspect the fulcrum bolts for damage.

3. Rotate the crankshaft until the tappet is on the cam base circle (all the way down), and install the rocker arm, fulcrum seat and fulcrum bolt. Tighten bolts to 24-34 Nm (18-25 lb-ft).

4. Clean the valve rocker arm cover(s) and the cylinder head gasket surface(s). Position a new service valve rocker cover gasket.

5. Position the cover(s) on the cylinder head(s). Tighten the bolts to 16-20 Nm (12-15 lb-ft).

6. Install the crankcase ventilation tube in the RH cover.

7. Install upper intake manifold.

8. Install the spark plug wires and bracket assembly on the rocker arm cover attaching stud. Connect the spark plug wires. Refer to Section 03-07B. Install the air intake duct assembly.

9. Install the secondary air injection bypass valve and air supply hoses (if required).

10. Run engine and check for leaks.
