Bumper, Rear

Mustang, Mustang GT and Mustang Cobra have bumper cover assemblies fabricated from a soft urethane plastic that are painted with elastomeric enamel. The cover assembly for the Mustang completely covers the rear bumper reinforcement.

Removal

NOTE: Push pins will be damaged during removal and new pins will be required for installation.

1. Remove six push pins retaining cover to bottom of bumper reinforcement.

2. Remove cover assembly from bumper.

3. Remove all nuts retaining cover to body.

4. Remove six bolts retaining bumper to isolators and remove bumper from vehicle.

    CAUTION: Never apply heat to the bumper energy absorbers. Heat could cause the material inside the absorbers to expand and flow out of the absorbers or crack the metal housing. Always remove the absorbers before making body frame service near them.

Installation

1. Position bumper assembly to isolators and install retaining bolts.

2. Tighten the isolator-to-reinforcement bolts to 19-27 Nm (14-20 lb-ft).

3. Install bumper cover assembly.

4. Install six new push pins retaining bumper cover to bumper.
