Ignition Lock Cylinder Assembly

Functional Lock

Removal

The following procedure pertains to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders; ignition keys are available for these vehicles; or the ignition key numbers are known and the proper key can be made.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable and air bag backup power supply.
  1. Remove the two trim shroud halves by removing the retaining screws.
  1. Remove the electrical connector from the key warning switch.
  1. Turn ignition switch to the RUN position.
  1. Place a 3mm (1/8 inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in the hole in the casting surrounding the lock cylinder, and depress the retaining pin while pulling out on the lock cylinder to remove it from the column housing.

Installation

  1. To install the lock cylinder, turn it to the RUN position, and depress the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing in the lock cylinder casting. Ensure that the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This action will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the hole in lock cylinder housing.
  1. Using ignition key, rotate lock cylinder to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions. Key release button must be used to obtain OFF and LOCK positions. Install electrical connector onto the key warning switch.
  1. Check for proper start in PARK or NEUTRAL. Also ensure that the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions and that the column is locked in the LOCK position.
  1. Install the trim shroud onto the steering column.
  1. Connect battery ground cable.

Non-Functional Lock

The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition lock is inoperative and the lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken ignition key; the key number is not known; or the lock cylinder cap is damaged and/or broken to the extent that the lock cylinder cannot be rotated.

Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable and air bag backup power supply.
  1. Remove steering wheel as outlined.
  1. Remove the two trim shroud halves by removing the retaining screws.
  1. Remove electrical connector from key warning switch.
  1. Using a 1/8-inch diameter drill, drill out the retaining pin, being cautious not to drill deeper than 12.7mm (1/2 inch).
  1. Place a chisel at the base of the ignition lock cylinder cap. Using a hammer strike chisel with sharp blows to break cap away from lock cylinder.
  1. Using a 3/8-inch diameter drill, drill down the middle of the ignition lock key slot approximately 44mm (1-3/4 inches) until the lock cylinder breaks loose from the breakaway base of the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder and the drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.
  1. Remove the snap ring or plastic retainer, washer, and steering column lock gear. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from the casting.
  1. Carefully inspect the lock cylinder housing for damage from the above operation. If any damage is apparent, the housing must be replaced.

Installation

  1. Install the ignition lock drive gear.
  1. Install the ignition lock cylinder.
  1. Adjust the ignition switch retained from the housing with the damaged lock cylinder, and install it onto the new lock cylinder housing.
  1. Install the new lock cylinder housing assembly.
  1. Install the steering wheel as outlined.
  1. Check for proper start in PARK or NEUTRAL. Also check to verify that the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE and REVERSE positions and that the column is locked in the LOCK position.
  1. Connect battery ground cable and air bag backup power supply.
