CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Steering Gear, Power—Flushing

Always flush the power steering gear when replacing the pump due to fluid contamination.

  1. Remove the pump and pulley, and service the pump. Refer to Section 11-02.
  1. Install the pulley on the serviced pump. Install the pump. Flush the pressure line before installing. Connect only the pressure hose.
  1. Place the fluid return line from the gear in a container, and plug the reservoir return line.
  1. Fill the reservoir with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA (ESW-M2C33-F) or equivalent.
  1. Disconnect ignition coil wire and raise the front wheel off the ground. Make sure vehicle is not in gear, refer to Section 00-02.
  1. While adding approximately 1.9 liters (0.5 gallon) of fluid, turn the ignition to the ON position (using the ignition key) and crank the engine with the starter while turning the steering wheel from left to right.
  1. When all the fluid has been added, turn ignition to the OFF position and connect the ignition coil wire.
  1. Remove the plug from the reservoir return line and attach the line to the reservoir.
  1. Check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary. Do not overfill the reservoir.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock without hitting the stops to expel any trapped air.
