REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Steering Pump

Removal

  1. To remove the power steering fluid from the pump reservoir, disconnect the fluid return hose at the reservoir, and drain the fluid into a container.
  1. Remove the pressure hose from the pump fitting.

Do not remove the fitting from the pump.

  1. Remove the mounting bracket. Disconnect the belt from the pulley, and remove the pump.
  1. Fixed Pump System on 5.0L engines: Remove the belt from the pulley, remove the pulley and remove the pump.

Installation

Prior to pump installation, remove the shipping tube nut from the pressure fitting.

  1. Place the pump on the mounting bracket and install the bolts at the front of the pump. Tighten to 40-62 Nm (30-45 lb-ft).
  1. Install the pump pulley, place the belt on the pulley and adjust belt tension.

CAUTION: Do not overtighten this fitting. Swivel and/or end play of the fitting is normal and does not indicate a loose fitting.

CAUTION: Over-tightening the tube nut can collapse the tube nut wall, resulting in a leak and requiring replacement of the entire pressure hose assembly. Use of an open-end wrench to tighten the nut can deform the tube nut hex which may result in improper torque and may make further servicing of the system difficult.

  1. Install the pressure hose to the pump fitting. Tighten the tube nut with a tube nut wrench rather than with an open-end wrench. Tighten to 27-34 Nm (20-25 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the return hose to the pump and tighten the clamp.
  1. Fill the reservoir with specified power steering fluid.

Use start-up procedure after power steering pump or gear overhaul. Refer to Section 11-00.

  1. Check for leaks and check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
