Section 10-01: Fuel Tank, Filter and Electric Fuel Pump | 1993 Mustang Workshop Manual |
Vehicles equipped with a multiport fuel injected (MFI) engine use an electric fuel pump (FP) (9350) to provide high-pressure fuel to the injectors. A high-pressure fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank.
The supply line which delivers fuel from the fuel tank to the engine is under pressure during vehicle operation. All fuel injection systems have a return line which returns excess fuel from the engine to the fuel tank. When fuel injected engines are turned off, the fuel in the fuel supply lines remains pressurized for long periods of time to provide quick start-ups. Special procedures for servicing a pressurized fuel system are outlined.
