DIAGNOSIS

Clutch Controls

Refer to the following diagnosis charts to service the clutch linkage.
CLUTCH DIAGNOSIS

  • Clutch Does Not Disengage Properly or Gears Clash While Shifting
  • Improper clutch pedal travel.
 
 
  • Pawl does not fully engage due to missing, damaged, or weak pawl spring.
  • Install new spring.
 
  • Improper clutch cable installed.
  • Install correct cable.
 
  • Damaged rubber insulators.
  • Correct insulators.
 
  • Loose pedal support attachments.
  • Loosen and retighten to specifications.
 
  • Carpet, sound deadener out of position.
  • Position correctly.
 
  • Floor mats interfering with pedal travel.
  • Reposition floor mats.
 
  • Pawl binding due to contamination.
  • Remove contamination and free up pawl.
 
  • Damaged components inside of clutch housing.
 
  • External linkage worn or damaged.
  • Service or replace linkage parts as required.
  • Pedal Makes Racheting Noise While Traveling To or From Floor
  • Teeth stripped on pawl or quadrant.
  • Replace quadrant, pawl and pawl spring.
  • Pedal Travels To Floor With No Effort or Noise
  • Pawl does not engage quadrant due to missing spring.
  • Install spring.
 
  • Broken clutch cable.
  • Replace clutch cable.
 
  • Damaged or loose components inside of clutch housing.
  • Clutch Squeaks or Scrubs When the Pedal is in Motion—Noise Originating in Engine Compartment
  • Clutch release linkage and/or cable—lack of lubrication, binding, interference, worn or kinked.
  • Lubricate with Premium Long-Life Grease C1AZ-19590-E (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent. Service as required.
 
  • Lack of lubrication on the clutch release lever to release bearing contact.
  • Remove transaxle and release bearing. Lubricate with Premium Long-Life Grease C1AZ-19590-E (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent, accordingly.
 
  • Lack of lubricant in the clutch release bearing bore and the release bearing guide.
  • Lubricate with Premium Long-Life Grease C1AZ-19590-E (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent, accordingly.
 
  • Flywheel housing out of alignment.
 
 
  • Damaged release bearing.
  • Excessive Pedal Effort
  • Damaged or worn cable.
  • Inspect cable. Replace if kinked or crushed.
  • Disconnect cable from release lever. Check for smooth operation or binding. Replace if operation is erratic.
 
  • Clutch pedal binding.
  • Disconnect cable from release lever. Check for free pedal movement and free up as required.
 
  • Clutch release lever binding.
 
  • Clutch disc worn or pressure plate damaged. Loose pressure plate bolts.
  • Noise When Clutch Pedal is Depressed
  • Check clutch interlock switch.
  • Inspect interlock switch activating rod for binding or excessive noise. Replace switch if necessary.
 
  • Noisy clutch speed control switches.
  • Check speed control switch if required.
 
  • Insufficient or dirty lubrication on clutch pivot sleeve.
  • Clean and lubricate clutch pivot sleeve with Premium Long-Life Grease C1AZ-19590-E (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent.
  • Vehicle Will Not Start With Clutch Pedal Fully Depressed
  • Clutch interlock switch improperly adjusted.
  • Reposition self-adjusting clip or rod on press and release clutch pedal.
 
  • Clutch interlock switch damaged.
  • Perform continuity test. Replace switch if necessary.
 
  • Starter, wiring or battery damaged.
