REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Shift Linkage Grommet
The automatic transmission linkage systems use a urethane plastic grommet
to connect the various rods and levers. Whenever a rod is
disconnected from a grommet-type connector, the old grommet must be removed and
a new one installed. Remove and install the grommet as follows:
Transmission on Bench
Tools Required:
- Transmission Shift Linkage Insulator Tool T67P-7341-A
- Place the lower jaw of Transmission Shift Linkage Insulator Tool
T67P-7341-A between the lever and the rod. Position stop pin against the end of
the rod and force the rod out of the grommet. Remove the grommet from the lever
by cutting off the large shoulder with a sharp knife.
- Adjust the stop to 12.7mm (1/2 inch) and coat the outside of the grommet
with lubricant. Place new grommet on the stop pin and force it into the lever
hole. Turn the grommet several times to be sure it is properly seated.
- Squeeze the rod into the bushing until the stopwasher seats against the
grommet.

Transmission in Vehicle
Tools Required:
- Grommet Remover T84P-7341-A
- Grommet Replacer T84P-7341-B
- Disconnect the linkage from the grommet.
- Position Grommet Remover T84P-7341-A. Rotate the screw in the tool until
the grommet is forced out of the lever.
- Adjust the stop on Grommet Replacer T84P-7341-B to 12.7mm (1/2 inch). Coat
the outside of the new grommet with lubricant.
- Position the grommet on the lever and install Grommet Replacer T84P-7341-B
on the lever. Rotate the screw to force the grommet into position. Turn the
grommet several times to be sure it is fully seated in the lever.
- Connect the linkage and tighten the mounting hardware to specification as
necessary.
